Four Lessons That Shaped My Restaurant Industry Journey
3 Min Read By Jennifer Karpinsky
Throughout my career in the restaurant industry, I’ve learned that success isn’t just about finding the right solutions – it’s about how you lead, adapt, and support the people around you. The restaurant industry has always been a passion of mine, especially the incredible people who bring it to life. It’s been a constant part of my journey for as long as I can remember. Of course, even with all of the positives, there have been plenty of hurdles along the way. But one thing I’ve learned is that every challenge presents an opportunity to improve. Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned fall into four key areas.
1. Balancing Innovation with Operational Efficiency
While technology and innovation have been game-changers for the restaurant industry, there’s a balance to strike to ensure it’s not just innovation for innovation’s sake. The best solutions don’t just streamline operations, they make life easier for restaurant teams. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on bridging the gap between technology and real-world restaurant challenges, ensuring that every tool we implement enhances efficiency without sacrificing the human element of hospitality. The future of restaurant tech isn’t just about speed, it’s about revolutionizing life for operators, staff and guests.
At Bonefish Grill, I learned firsthand how important it is to balance innovation with operational efficiency. When introducing new restaurant software technology and launching the company’s first private dining program, I focused on ensuring that these changes improved the guest experience without disrupting day-to-day operations. Developing system-wide training programs and blended learning courses helped teams adopt new technology smoothly, making the transition more effective. Managing product testing and rollout schedules reinforced the value of planning and precision, ensuring consistency across 50 new restaurant openings. Through these experiences, I saw how the right balance between innovation and structure can drive both efficiency and long-term success.
2. Addressing Challenges Head-On
The restaurant industry is fast-paced, and avoiding problems only makes them harder to solve. I’ve learned to embrace challenges as opportunities and to analyze, adapt, and find solutions that drive long-term success. Whether it’s navigating complex integrations or scaling enterprise solutions, tackling obstacles with a proactive mindset has been key to delivering results.
In 2024, our QSR Automations team faced evolving demands from enterprise clients that required us to rethink our approach to onboarding. Rather than sidestepping these challenges, we focused on developing scalable solutions that improved efficiency and set customers up for long-term success. By fostering an inclusive and high-performing team culture, we created agile processes that allowed us to adapt quickly and effectively. Confronting these challenges directly not only strengthened our operations but also reinforced the importance of flexibility and collaboration in an ever-changing industry.
3. Investing in Your People
Great technology is only as strong as the people behind it. Mentorship has played a huge role in my own growth, and I believe in paying that forward. Empowering my team through guidance, trust, and opportunities to lead has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
Investing in people isn’t just about providing guidance—it’s about creating an environment where they feel empowered to take ownership and grow. I’ve always believed that success comes from lifting others up, whether it’s helping a team member navigate a complex process, connecting them with the right resources, or encouraging them to step into leadership roles. By fostering a culture of learning and collaboration, I’ve seen firsthand how teams become more confident, capable, and innovative. When people feel supported, they don’t just complete tasks—they contribute ideas, take initiative, and drive meaningful change.
4. Celebrating the Wins
In an industry that’s always moving, it’s easy to always anticipate what’s next and jump from one project to the next without pausing to recognize achievements. But, taking the time to celebrate progress – both big and small – fosters motivation, strengthens teams, and reinforces a culture of success. I make it a priority to recognize achievements, whether it’s overcoming a tough challenge, launching a successful project, or seeing a team member step into a new leadership role. Celebrating these wins isn’t just about giving praise; it’s about reinforcing a culture where people feel valued and inspired to keep pushing forward. When we take the time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished, we not only build confidence but also create momentum for future growth and success. Acknowledging hard work and innovation is just as important as driving the next big initiative.
These four principles have shaped my approach to leadership and problem-solving in the restaurant industry. Success is about striking the right balance between efficiency and innovation, tackling challenges head-on, investing in people, and recognizing the wins along the way.
