From Grand Central to Culinary Central: Take the Train to the Hudson Valley

Take the train to dine during Fall 2016 Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW), November 1 through 13, when the valley’s top chefs and restaurateurs prepare for the region’s ultimate culinary event and celebrate its tenth anniversary. Presented by The Valley Table magazine, HVRW offers everything from Hudson River views of the Palisades (Harvest on Hudson in Hastings On Hudson and The Red Hat Bistro in Irvington) to village Main Street shopping (Cathryn’s Tuscan Grill in Cold Spring and Kitchen Sink Food & Drink in Beacon), with more than 100 Restaurant Week participants within walking distance from a Metro North Railroad stop along the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines.

The two-week dining event offers diners the chance to experience the best restaurants of the region at a fraction of the normal price point. With more than 200 participating restaurants, HVRW showcases the Valley’s vibrant dining scene and helps reinforce relationships among the chefs and local farmers, winemakers, brewers, distillers, artisanal producers and purveyors.

Home to The Culinary Institute of America, the Hudson Valley is a hotbed of culinary talent. Increasingly, New York City chefs, including Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Michael Psilakis, Mario Batali and Michael White, have come upriver to open restaurants closer to the farms they source, expanding the array of dining options.

“The Hudson Valley is home to some of the best chefs in America,” says Janet Crawshaw, publisher of The Valley Table magazine and founding sponsor of HVRW. “We are delighted to partner with MTA Metro-North to invite people throughout the New York Metro area to discover the culinary pleasures of the region.”

Spanning 115 miles across seven New York State counties, the event is geographically one of the largest Restaurant Week happenings in the nation. Diners can enjoy a three-course lunch for $20.95, or a three-course dinner for $29.95 (tax, drinks and gratuity not included).

“With most restaurants being less than a ten-minute walk from the station, it’s simple to take Metro North up from the city during Hudson Valley Restaurant Week,” says Donna Haynes, assistant director of promotional partnerships at Metro-North.

In 1996, Janet Crawshaw and Jerry Novesky took an eight-month sabbatical, traveling 35,000 miles across the country seeking authentic American experiences. They found that local farms, bakeries, fish markets, wineries and breweries were the key to understanding the country’s distinct regions. Inspired by their trip and the Chefs Collaborative, an educational sustainable food organization, the couple returned to their home in the Hudson Valley with a mission to awaken the region’s food consciousness. In 1998, they launched The Valley Table, a quarterly consumer magazine that celebrates the agricultural heritage and cuisine of the region, advancing the development of the Hudson Valley’s local food movement.

Crawshaw and Novesky launched Hudson Valley Restaurant Week in 2006 with a distinguished board of advisors, including chefs, restaurateurs and tourism leaders. The two-week culinary event premiered with 70 restaurants. Today, with more than 200 participating restaurants spanning seven counties it is among the largest Restaurant Week events in the country, involving farmers, growers, wine makers, distillers and brewers, as well as chefs. Participating counties include Dutchess, Westchester, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan and Ulster.  To learn more about Hudson Valley Restaurant Week or to become a sponsor please visit: www.hudsonvalleyrestaurantweek.com
