Is Your Restaurant Ready for the Biggest Patio Season Yet?
3 Min Read
We are heading into one of the busiest patio seasons on record, and for restaurants, the difference between a good summer and a great one comes down to preparation. With major global events set to drive unprecedented foot traffic this year, outdoor dining can be a front line of restaurant profitability.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to draw record crowds across North America, and restaurants with well-run patios are positioned to capture a massive share of that demand. Operators have to be ready to keep up with the demand.
Patios Are a Revenue Engine, Not Just Extra Seating
New TouchBistro research, conducted in partnership with The Harris Poll and surveying more than 1,200 full-service restaurant operators across the U.S. and Canada, found that patios account for an average of around 20 percent of total sales, with many operators reporting between 25 and 49 percent.
That is nearly half of a restaurant’s annual revenue flowing through its outdoor space during the warmer months.
More than 81 percent of North American operators offer outdoor dining, and over 80 percent of those who do report being optimistic about the future of their business. It is not a coincidence. A well-run patio season can determine whether a restaurant finishes the year strong.
"Patio season has always been a critical revenue window for restaurants, but 2026 represents something truly extraordinary. With the FIFA World Cup bringing an unprecedented wave of fans to bars and restaurants across North America, operators who invest in the right technology and systems now will be the ones who capture that demand and turn a great summer into a record-breaking year. Our research shows that outdoor dining already drives up to half of annual revenue for many operators. The difference between good and great this season comes down to preparation." Growth is Good, But it Brings New Pressure
Operators are investing in their outdoor spaces: 30 percent have expanded their patio seating capacity in the past year. But more seats means more complexity. Over 30 percent of operators report that more customers are arriving in larger groups, a trend expected to intensify as fans gather to watch World Cup matches together. Coordinating larger parties, managing fluctuating guest flow, and keeping service consistent across indoor and outdoor areas all add meaningful strain on already lean teams.
Patio operations, in other words, require more than simply adding staff, but smarter systems and better forecasting to project demand.
How to Run a Leaner, More Profitable Patio
TouchBistro’s 2026 Patio Season Guide outlines a practical playbook for operators who want to make this their strongest summer yet.
Key strategies include:
Leveraging technology to streamline service: Mobile POS systems and QR code menus reduce the friction of outdoor service, letting staff spend less time running orders back and forth and more time delivering an exceptional guest experience.
Optimizing staffing with cross-training: Operators managing labor costs primarily do so by increasing productivity and training staff to work fluidly across roles. This flexibility is especially valuable during unpredictable volume swings on a patio.
Unlocking private events as a revenue stream: Thirty-nine percent of operators plan to add private events this season, a savvy move that converts outdoor space into a higher-margin, bookable asset beyond regular service hours.
Using labor management platforms: Scheduling tools that account for seasonal demand patterns help operators staff smarter, avoiding the twin pitfalls of understaffing on a packed Friday night or overstaffing on a slow Tuesday afternoon.
Preparation Is the Competitive Advantage
Restaurants that succeed this summer will treat outdoor dining as the strategic revenue driver it is, planning their staffing model, investing in the right technology stack, and building guest experiences that keep people coming back.
With the World Cup drawing fans into bars and restaurants all summer long, 2026 is a genuine inflection point. The operators who prepare now will be the ones pouring celebratory pints come the final whistle.
